Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has bought a stake in the Oakland Ballers, an independent minor league team in the Pioneer League. The punk rock legend now joins the Ballers ownership group that is providing a boost to the Bay Area’s baseball scene following the A’s relocation to Las Vegas. With the Ballers now the sole professional baseball team in the East Bay, Armstrong and fellow investor, rap legend Too $hort, aim to help reignite the community spirit of the area. “This is all about bringing families to a ball game,” Armstrong said in a statement. “After the A’s left, the town was heartbroken. The Ballers are going to bring good vibes back to Oakland and the broader East Bay.” The team is gearing up for their second season on May 20th, following a successful inaugural campaign that saw the Ballers make the Pioneer League playoffs while filling their 4,000-seat Raimondi Park with fans, including an appearance by Armstrong at a game last summer.
